Is the house free?

No. The program is a hand up, not a handout. Partner families purchase the home from MCHFH and pay a mortgage plus taxes and insurance. The homes are sold at cost with a zero interest mortgage.

Don't the homes get trashed a lot?

Not really. We try to select responsible people and evaluate their living conditions during interviews. In addition, we require attendance at budgeting and home maintenance classes. The vast majority of our families care for their homes quite well, but some do not.
